Every year it is the task of NewMusicSA, the South African section of the International Society for Contemporary Music, to organize the local call for compositions for the Society's annual 'World Music Days'. At the 2007 World Music Days in Hong Kong in November 2008, South Africa will be represented by Stefans Grové's Five Glimpses for Piano. The local South African jury has also just completed reviewing the submissions for the 2008 festival, which will be held in Lithuania.
The local jury comprised Chatradari Devroop, Marc Duby, Cameron Harris and Chris Walton. The scores submitted for consideration covered a broad range of styles and genres, and their quality was uniformly high. Particularly encouraging was the number of submissions from young South African composers. The following five works were chosen for submission to the ISCM:
It is now the task of the International Jury (comprising Peter Eötvös, Luca Francesconi, Jonathan Harvey, Onute Narbutaite and Helena Tulve) to pick one of these works for performance in Lithuania next year. For more information, see www.iscm.org.
