NEWMUSICSA CALLS FOR SOUTH AFRICAN COMPOSITIONS

Please find below the call for compositions for the 2008 ISCM World Music Days, to be held in Lithuania. As every year, it is the task of NewMusicSA, as the South African section of the ISCM, to organize the local call for compositions, set up a jury and submit up to six works to the International Jury (with whom lies the decision which of those recommended will then be performed at the World Music Days).

I should be grateful if you would kindly inform all your colleagues and students of this call for compositions, and encourage everyone to submit a work. There is no entry fee. While we hope that you will also encourage everyone to join NewMusicSA, membership is not a prerequisite for submission. The composers whose works are finally chosen to be sent to the International Jury will, however, have to join NewMusicSA in order to be considered for inclusion in the main festival.

Please note that the ISCM this year is actively encouraging works in multimedia or other forms. A written score is not a prerequisite for consideration!

Our timetable is as follows:

IN-BETWEEN – CONTEMPORARY MUSIC AS A TRANSIT ZONE AND MIDDLE GROUND

The theme aims to reflect the multitude of positions any form of contemporary music can take today in the wider cultural landscape, and the various ways through which the music of today reaches an audience. Throughout the last decades it has become clear that our contemporary music experiences are no longer to be confined to the concert hall alone, and that this music can share its audience with other artistic output. Moreover, though in these days of I-pods and internet radio, classical or contemporary music audiences may not have become bigger, they certainly come from a much wider base.

CALL FOR WORKS AND PROJECTS

NB: We encourage the submission of projects that might otherwise be deemed unclassifiable, or that bridge the space between genres, traditions or art forms.

Please note: Only one submission per composer can be accepted

Applications are invited for all kinds of music:

as well as any combinations other than above mentioned.

All submissions must be accompanied by the following:
  1. Explanation of the connection to the festival theme (‘in-between’), for every work and all programme proposals.
  2. Two copies of the score, or (for non-notated works) two copies of audio/video material.
  3. A short biography of the composer in English (approx. 200 words), on paper and in electronic format (either on diskette or as an email to:
  4. A recent photo of the composer (preferably electronically in jpeg format, by email on on diskette).
  5. Proof of nationality.
  6. Snailmail and email address of the composer, with website address where appropriate.
  7. A recording of the submitted work if possible (preferably on CD; or in the case of multi-media, cross-media projects and sound installations: DVD).
  8. Programme notes in English for the work submitted (approx. 200 words, on paper and electronically).
  9. The year of composition. Works submitted must have been composed in or after 1997. Please specify if the work has not yet been performed.
  10. An accurate estimate of the duration of the work. It is preferable that works submitted are not too lengthy. A maximum of around 15 minutes is recommended for the submitted work.
  11. Any other information or documentation necessary or relevant to the jury’s work.

Central in this festival edition will be the music of ISCM members and two composers in focus – Jonathan Harvey (with an exciting world première) and Peter Eötvös (both as a conductor and a composer). We want to explore new ways of presenting contemporary music to newfound audiences, through multimedia, crossover programmes, installations, fringe programmes and interactive web-based content. To its foreign guests the festival wants to offer an outstanding showcase of the rich music life of the Baltic area.
