Welcome to our February Newsletter. In this issue, we have membership information; two new opportunities for performers; members’ news; a forthcoming symposium as well as the usual reminders of calls for scores.

NewMusicSA Membership

We wish to thank all members who have already renewed their subscription to NewMusicSA and welcome our new members.

We hope that current members have, by now, received an email inviting you to renew your membership. If you have not done so, please let me know whether or not you wish to continue membership. It is not too late to be an 'early bird' - you have 4 more days!

Percussion News from Italy, PAS

The Italian Percussion Arts Society, PAS, would like to share information about their events in 2017:

Please check out the 15th International Italy Percussion Competition for percussion soloists and the 2nd Percussive Arts Web Contest for percussion ensemble this year. See information website.

Show your skills in front of a jury of international percussion masters in the sections Marimba, Vibraphone, Timpani, Snare Drum, Drum set & Composition. The competition takes place from the 19th to 24th September 2017 in Montesilvano Pescara. The deadline for completing the online application is before the 4th June 2017.

To date, the confirmed presidents of the juries are: David Friedman (Vibraphone), Dom Famularo (Drum Set), Frederic Macarez (Snare Drum and Timpani), Gordon Stout (Marimba & Composition).

 

Berliner Competition

This is a competition for piano, strings and voice and takes place on-line. Please visit their website for details. Note that this competition is open until 10 March.

 

Members’ News

     1. Notice of Past Event

During 15-17 February, WITS student Mbe Mbhele, with colleagues, brought struggle song into an academic and performative, curated space in a tour of the Western Cape. Their initiative, 'Ingoma Yomzabalazo', was partnered and supported by BLK Thought, PASS, Iphupho l'ka Biko, and Africa Open.

Symposium

Nominations for the 2017 BBVA Foundation Frontiers of Knowledge awards are now open.

The BBVA Foundation Frontiers of Knowledge Awards recognize and encourage fundamental advances in basic and applied research, as materialized in models and theories for understanding the natural and social worlds, technological innovations of broad impact and salient contributions to the creation, performance and conducting of the classical music of our time. Honours also go to outstanding contributions that advance understanding or deliver material progress with regard to two key challenges of the global society of the 21st century, climate change and development cooperation.

Reminders of Call for Scores

       1. Call for Scores, The Riot Ensemble

On October 28th the Riot Ensemble will give the UK Premiere of Chaya Czernowin's Ayre: Towed through plumes, thicket, asphalt, sawdust and hazardous air I shall not forget the sound of. They are looking for two composers of any nationality and age, who will each receive £550 commissions to write for the same line-up of bass flute, bass clarinet, percussion, piano, violin, viola and cello.

They have previously released live videos of CFS commissions, and in two weeks we'll be recording their 2016 commissions - from Yukiko Watanabe and Lee Westwood - for their second commercial album with Coviello Classics.

Your application must be received by 3rd March directly through their website.

       2. Elektro Arts – Call for Works

The Babes-Bolyai University, the Art and Design University, and the Gheorghe Dima Music Academy are pleased to announce the 2nd edition of Elektro Arts. The Festival will take place on May 12th and May 13th, 2017 on the beautiful venues of Cluj-Napoca.

The Festival will be hosting a Call for Electroacoustic Works, which has always been committed to showcasing Digital Art.

Established or emerging sound artists are invited to submit their original works from the wide spectrum of electroacoustic music. Regardless of the variety of style, preference will be given to music for 1-6 channels fixed media.

The works must be received by March 31st, 2017. Complete details of the submission process are found online.

       3. The 8th International Antonín Dvořák Composition Competition

       A note from the International Antonín Dvořák Composition Competition Committee:

The 8th International Antonín Dvořák Composition Competition will be held at the Prague Conservatory in the Czech Republic from 23 to 31 Jul 2017. This competition was founded in order to extol the great accomplishments of the composer Antonín Dvořák, and to discover and raise-up young, talented composers who can carry on the historical musical legacy. The composition committee intends to support the selected composers’ continued development by providing composition commissions, as well as recording and performance opportunities.        2nd Round: 23 – 31 July, 2017

       4. Competition: Ensemble Nuove Musiche

Ensemble Nuove Musiche association announces an international competition whose award ceremony will take place in Savona (Italy) in 2017. The award ceremony of this call will be part of the 5th edition of the Festival Internazionale di Musica di Savona organized by them in the city of Savona.
