Call for Scores, ISCM World Music Days 2018 Next year, ISCM will be holding their World Music Days in Beijing, China from 19 to 26 May. They wish to share their call for scores for this event with us, as NewMusicSA is affiliated with ISCM. As you will see from their call, they require six scores from South African composers by 31 December 2017. Members of NewMusicSA can submit for free, but are required to submit scores for selection by no later than 1 December 2017 to allow time for the final selection process. Please can interested members submit up to three scores in one of the listed categories in the call to members@newmusicsa.org.za. The following information is required:
As there was some dispute over the selection process last year, due to some issues with the appointed selection panel and the method of selecting the final six scores, we have decided that, for this year, three of our board members will make their selection independently and the final six will be agreed by all board members. Naturally, for there to be no conflict of interest, no board member is permitted to enter this year. Non-members of NewMusicSA are also entitled to enter. In this event, a non-member may either become a member for R200 and enter for free, or submit individually using the information in the call, for which the entry fee to ISCM is 50 Euros. If you have any queries or concerns, you are welcome to communicate via members@newmusicsa.org.za. Abstracts and queries can be directed to: Marita Lübbe, marita.lubbe@up.ac.za. The symposium will conclude with performances by the Mageshen Naidoo Ensemble, the Tshwane School of Music, Jesse Mogale and CAFCA. Premières Reminder: On Tuesday 22 August at 19h30, the Kayser String Quartet is giving a world première performance of David Kosviner’s Durban Essence. This work, in one movement and for piano quintet, was commissioned by SAMRO. David Smith is the pianist and the concert, which also features music by Beethoven and Shostakovich, will take place in Durban at the Jewish Centre – 44 KE Masinga (Old Fort) Road - as part of the Friends of Music recitals. West Coast Youth Orchestra Readers may recall that, in last month’s newsletter, I announced a première of my own music, Our Rainbow Nation, written for the West Coast Youth Orchestra. The work was received well at their concert in Langebaan, and also during their tour of Europe, in particular Slovakia. More appropriately, the orchestra (both senior and junior) competed with 31 other orchestras from around the globe and the senior orchestra was awarded 80%, whereas the junior orchestra was awarded 71%. I felt that this was a tremendous achievement bearing in mind that some members consist of youth from disadvantaged backgrounds, and that many had not been exposed to contemporary Western music. I am sure that you will all join me in wishing this orchestra well for their future development.
