Three Mpondo folktales
"The woman who turned into a horse"
"The Flute"
"Gil'ibhadi and the beautiful girl"
These are authentic Mpondo folktales. The storyteller was Mncinane Manqondo, and she told many more tales than the seven in the cycle. The tales were recorded, transcribed and translated by Dr JV Cantrell from UNISA. He published 20 tales in a parallel edition (Xhosa and English). The lyrics were prepared by the composer and then set to music. Three of these folktales are presented here.
François de Villiers studied harmony with Marianne Feenstra, counterpoint with John Coulter, percussion with Jon Wishnuff and orchestration and conducting with Prof Walter Mony, and obtained a Licentiate in Harmony. He had individual composition lessons (briefly) with Martijn Padding, Theo Loevendie, Robert Rollins and Kevin Volans. He has composed sporadically since 1998. His works include two song cycles (When will I see you again, and Tales from Mpondoland), four works for piano, a sonata for marimba and viola, two orchestral works and several other works for chamber instruments. He has retired from his day job, and now lives in Plettenberg Bay.
