January Newsletter

1/1/2019

Greetings everybody. Welcome to our January newsletter. From now on, our monthly newsletters will go out on the first day of the month. Please remember to send all your info to daniel@botsheloarts.co.za

I got a bit of flak from a member for leaving John Dowland and McCoy Tyner off the list of composers born in December! My apologies.

This month, I draw attention to the steel pan calendar; January is the annual focal point for all things related to the steel pan in Trinidad and Tobago. www.panonthenet.com/tnt/2019/schedule.htm

Good to see the reminders section filling up!

Firstly this month, a call for proposals sent our way from SASRIM:

Invitation and Call for Contributions
SOUTH AFRICAN SOCIETY FOR RESEARCH IN MUSIC THIRTEENTH ANNUAL CONGRESS
Music Department, Stellenbosch University, Stellenbosch, South Africa
4 – 7 September 2019
SASRIM encourages the submission of a wide variety of proposals, including those that explore alternative formats, disciplinary intersections, and the convergences and divergences between performance and/as research.

Coinciding with the congress will be a two-day workshop in big band composition, arrangement, and performance; further details will be communicated early in 2019.

All proposals will be assessed individually, without privileging particular subjects or methodologies.

The society extends a special invitation to undergraduate and postgraduate students to submit proposals. Depending on the availability of funding, students whose proposals are accepted may apply to SASRIM for financial support towards travel and accommodation.

SASRIM invites proposals in a wide range of formats including:
• papers (20 minutes presentation + 10 minutes discussion)
• lecture - demonstrations (45 minutes presentation + 15 minutes discussion)
• panels (45 minutes presentation + 15 minutes discussion)
• performances and/or demonstrations (20 - 45 minutes presentation + 10 minutes discussion)
• workshops • exhibitions, film screenings and poster presentations

All proposals must be submitted as a word document and should include:
• an abstract with title (not exceeding 300 words)
• biographical note (not exceeding 50 words), e-mail address and phone numberof presenter(s)
• audio-visual or display requirements• any additional requirements (instruments, equipment etc.)

• a title, description of individual contributions and overarching theme[s] (450 words)
• proposed duration in the case of workshops, film screenings and panels
• biographical information, institutional affiliation and contact details for all participants
• audio - visual or display requirements• any additional requirements (instruments, equipment etc).

Proposals must be submitted to abstracts@sasrim.ac.za no later than 31 March 2019.
The programme committee expects to contact all applicants with a final decision by 1 May2019.

Programme Committee: Lizabé Lambrechts (convenor), Carina Venter, Lindelwa Dalamba, Michael Okanta

Next up, an opportunity to enter another competition... for the ensemble Wild Rumpus, with very attractive instrumentation. (No compositions for voice and harpsichord allowed this time, however.)
Suzanne and Lee Ettelson Composer’s Award
An award of $1,000 will be given for a new chamber work. The winning work will be performed in the San Francisco Bay Area during the 2019-20 concert season. Award winners are expected to attend performances. Works not awarded prizes will also be considered for programming.

Eligibility
Composers of any age or nationality may enter. Previous winners of this award are ineligible.

Guidelines
Entries may be scored for one to five performers plus conductor. Performers shall be drawn from the core instrumentation of the ensemble Wild Rumpus: flute/piccolo/alto flute, clarinet/bass clarinet, trombone, electric guitar, piano, violin, cello, double bass (one player each). Works may include one or two instruments not listed above, including voice(s) and electronics, but must include at least one member of the core instrumentation.
Examples: a string quartet is eligible, as is a trio for flute, viola and harp. A duo for oboe and French horn is not eligible, nor is a work for voice and harpsichord.
Composers may submit more than one work.
Preparing Your Entry
Submit an ANONYMOUS .pdf and streaming audio link of each score on the submission form. The submitted .pdf’s and audio links must be free of names and identifying marks (including composer, dedicatee, performer, and publisher names). A non-refundable entry fee of $25 USD for one work and $20 USD for each additional work is due on submission. Please proceed to online instruction on the website. http://composersinc.org/?page_id=29
Judging
The judges are six of the artistic directors of Composers, Inc.: Robert Greenberg, Emma Logan, Frank La Rocca, Ryan Rey, Allen Shearer, and Nick Vasallo; and the Artistic Director of Wild Rumpus, Nathaniel Berman.

Deadline

Entries must be completed by January 19, 2019. The winner will be announced during March, 2019. You may reach us at mail@composersinc.org if you have any questions.
