June Newsletter

21/6/2017

Dear Subscriber

Welcome to our June Newsletter. In this issue, we have a reminder of submissions for this year’s Indaba; a reminder of the call for articles; premières in South Africa; a Call for Scores; a notification of a festival as well as the usual reminders for opportunities.

As always, do let me know of any newsworthy items, for the next issue, that would help you to publicise your events in or after August. Likewise, if you hear of any composers’ or performers’ opportunities, just send an email to me at malcolmdedman@gmail.com.

Call for Submissions Reminder - NMSA Indaba 2017

Just to remind you of the Call for Submissions for which there is a deadline of 17 July. Note that, in addition to music compositions to be performed, submissions include collaborations; workshops; masterclasses; presentations, etc. Please note the theme of the call, although the team welcomes submissions outside the scope of this theme.

The team look forward to receiving your submissions.

Reminder of Call for Articles on Music

Matete Mahlare is calling for articles to be published in an on-line magazine, called ‘Lyrics’, which she is planning to promote later this year. The magazine is planned to be launched as a website as well as in hard-copy. Articles from musicologists or about musicology are welcome, in addition to more general articles about anything musical and any genre reflecting issues in South Africa or any other part of the world.

If you have an idea for an article, please contact Matete on lyricsmagazine@webmail.co.za or telephone her on 072-224 3450. Please note the email has now changed since my last publication.

Premières

  1. On Friday 30 June, the West Coast Youth Orchestra, director Carina Brown, will give the world première performance of Malcolm Dedman’s Our Rainbow Nation in the Curro Langebaan Independant School, Langebaan, Western Cape, at 18h30. This is a ‘Farewell’ concert prior to their European tour, scheduled for July. The work was written for them as a request for a piece that includes African Marimbas and Kalimbas as solo parts.
  2. On Tuesday 22 August at 19h30, the Kayser String Quartet is giving a world première performance of David Kosviner’s Durban Essence. This work, in one movement and for piano quintet, was commissioned by SAMRO. David Smith is the pianist and the concert, which also features music by Beethoven and Shostakovich, will take place in Durban at the Jewish Centre – 44 KE Masinga (Old Fort) Road - as part of the Friends of Music recitals.

Call for Scores

Ingrid Wendel, from the violin and piano duo ‘duoW’, is requesting scores by South African composers. The duo is especially interested in violin and piano music that uses some aspect of our indigenous music within the work. They are also happy to receive scores that include cello. You may visit their website and scores can be sent to Ingrid by emailing mail@ingridwendel.com.

49th INTERNATIONAL ENCUENTROS FESTIVAL 2017

Please find attached details of this Festival. This has been sent by Prof. Alicia Terzian and the organiser is an official member of the ISCM in Argentina.

In addition, Prof. Alicia has produced a CD titled ‘Off the Edge’ devoted to four of her orchestral works, available from Amazon.
