Dear Subscriber

Welcome to our December Newsletter. In this issue, we have news from the ISCM; the report for the Visby Residency collaboration; opportunities for composers and performers as well as the usual reminder of opportunities.

As always, do let me know of any newsworthy items, for the next issue, that would help you to publicise your events in or after February 2018. Likewise, if you hear of any composers’ or performers’ opportunities, just send an email to me at malcolmdedman@gmail.com.

On behalf of our board members, I would like to wish everyone an enjoyable festive season and a happy and fruitful New Year.

ISCM World Music Days
We have now received seventeen scores from ten different composer members for the World Music Days (WMD) in Beijing during 2018. Many thanks to those who have responded to the call. We expect to announce the final six composers and their works very soon.

During this year’s event in Vancouver, you may remember that Maike Watson had a piano piece performed. You can hear the performance here.

Visby Composers’ Residency
Earlier this year, we sent Diale Mabitsela to Visby for this exciting opportunity for him. Please download his report here.

Hélianthe contest, 2nd Edition
Grégoire Feybesse, a saxophone teacher at the Music Conservatory of Angoulême, wishes us to know of the second edition of the Hélianthe contest. For this edition, they are inaugurating a new format over two years to allow more time for the two phases of the competition: reception and pre-selection of candidate works on the one hand, and voting by classes and sponsors on the other hand. To participate you just have to register online at this address: http://concours.ensemblehelianthe.fr/fr/. The English, Spanish, German and Italian versions of the website are still under translation process, but you can subscribe anyway by using the French version.

The goal of this contest is to compose a pedagogical music piece at most 4 minutes long which has to be link to another type of art (free choice). This piece should be for alto saxophone which can be alone or accompanied by piano, percussion, theatre, dance, video or audio file (4 channels max with stereo reduction mandatory). The composition (including accompaniment) should be playable by young musicians from 1 to 6 years of practice, corresponding at ABRSM levels 1 to 5.

Composition(s) submission(s) deadline is 1 April 2018. Registration fee is 10 € per composition.

A maximum of ten compositions will be selected to participate to the final. Those pieces will be sent to saxophone class partners (at least fifty) and to the sponsors.

Teacher, student and sponsors will vote for their favourites before June, 1st 2019. The Top 3 from the vote will receive the following prizes:
  • First prize: Composition’s order of 1500€ and publication by Robert Martin editor.
  • Second prize: Composition’s order of 800€ and publication by Robert Martin editor.
  • Sponsor’s award: Composition’s order of 800€ and publication by Robert Martin editor.
In addition, the finalist pieces will be offered an edition by MDpublications.

More information is available here.
