To all our subscribers
Welcome to our August Newsletter. In this issue, we have news of our forthcoming Indaba; an obituary; an opportunity for composers as well as the usual reminder of opportunities. As always, do let me know of any newsworthy items, for the next issue, that would help you to publicise your events in or after October 2018. Likewise, if you hear of any composers’ or performers’ opportunities, just send an email to me at [email protected]. NMSA Indaba 2018 We are excited to announce that our Indaba this year will take place in Nelson Mandela University, South Campus in Port Elizabeth from Friday 5 to Sunday 7 October. We would love to see as many of you as possible attend this, our main event of the year. Our events centre around three concerts. The first on Friday evening is entitled ‘Transcript’, South African International Viola Congress (IVC) Rotterdam Programme. It will be performed by Elmarie van der Vyver (viola) and Mathilda Hornsveld (piano) who will play works by Niel van der Watt, Franco Prinsloo and Pieter Bezuidenhout. The second major event is a recital given by the South African pianist, Dominic Daula on Saturday evening. He plays works by James May, Hubert du Plessis, Hendrik Hofmeyr, Casey Chiang, Robert Fokkens, Malcolm Dedman and Arnold van Wyk. The final concert is on Sunday evening and is a collaboration between NewMusicSA and staff and students of Nelson Mandela University. This chamber concert is entitled ‘Tribute to Madiba’ when they will play works by John Simon, Malcolm Dedman, Douglas Scott, Lise Morrison and Hendrik van Blerk. On Saturday and Sunday 15/16 September, The Nelson Mandela University Symphony Orchestra will perform a work by Maike Watson. This will be videoed and played back during the Indaba weekend. Miles Warrington will also give a talk and demonstration of his electronic composition, plus there will be talks, discussions and workshops to be held during the daytimes. In addition, composition students of the university will have an opportunity to workshop their music when it is intended that their work will be debated by those present. A full programme will be published on our website soon, so please watch this space. We hope to see you there.
