Welcome to our January Newsletter, the first in 2018. On behalf of the NMSA Board I wish you all a very happy and prosperous New Year, even if slightly belated.

In this issue, we have news about the ISCM submissions; current NMSA board; an opportunity for performers as well as the usual reminder of opportunities.

As always, do let me know of any newsworthy items, for the next issue, that would help you to publicise your events in or after March 2018. Likewise, if you hear of any composers’ or performers’ opportunities, just send an email to me at [email protected].


ISCM World Music Days

Our six composers have been selected and have been submitted to the ISCM. They are:

• Michael Blake: Cello/Orchestra for violoncello solo and orchestra.
• Robert Fokkens: Ukuhamba Kukufunda for orchestra.
• Christopher Jeffery: De Voortrekkers for orchestra (film soundtrack).
• Jaco Meyer: Repetitionen for chamber ensemble.
• John Simon: Coquette for solo flute.
• Miles Warrington: PSITHURISM for 2 channel fixed media.

Congratulations to these composers. We will let you know who the ISCM selects for performance at the World Music Days in Beijing as soon as we know.

 
Current NMSA Board Members

At our AGM, we elected the following Board Members:

• Malcolm Dedman – chairman.
• Douglas Scott – treasurer and secretary (temporarily).
• Lukas Ligeti.
• Matete Mahlare.
• François de Villiers.
• Diale Mabitsela.

Malcolm is also has the portfolio for both membership and communications (newsletter).

It is important to note that Douglas Scott will have to stand down later this year which means that there are openings for both treasurer and secretary, both key roles in the organisation. We are currently in discussion with Diale Mabitsela for the role of treasurer, but there is still an opening for secretary. Please let me know if you would like to be considered for this role and Doug will gladly liaise to help hand over the duties.


Third International Manhatten Music Competition

This competition is for piano, strings and voice for which applications can be made online by 28 February 2018.

Successful applicants will be granted a recital at the Carnegie Hall on 7 July, or a CD recording. The above website gives the full details.
 

Reminder of Opportunities

1. Call for Scores ‘Risuonanze 2018’

Held by Associazione Culturale TKE, this Call is open to composers of any nationality and age. You are welcome to download the full information, noting the deadline is March 19 2018.

     2.  International Composition Competition, Città di Udine
The rules and conditions of the new international composition competition "Città di Udine" (12 Edition) are online on Taukay music publishing house website - see below.

There are two sections:
- compositions for chamber instrumental group or solo instrument
- electroacoustic music

Deadline: March 31st 2018

     3.  Hélianthe contest, 2nd Edition
This is a request for a pedagogical music piece of at most 4 minutes long which has a link to another type of art (free choice). The piece should be for alto saxophone which can be alone or accompanied by piano, percussion, theatre, dance, video or audio file (4 channels max with stereo reduction mandatory). The composition (including accompaniment) should be playable by young musicians from 1 to 6 years of practice, corresponding at ABRSM levels 1 to 5.

Composition(s) submission(s) deadline is 1 April 2018. Registration fee is 10 € per composition.

     4.  Mauricio Kagel Composition Competition
Composers younger than 40 years can submit pieces for piano that are suitable for children and young adults.

Deadline: 15 August 2018.

The prize money totals 10,000 Euros.
