February Newsletter

8/2/2019

Greetings everybody. This is a month to remember the birth of George Frideric Handel, among others. It is also the month wherein Handel chose to premiere many of his large scale works: Semele, Susanna, Rodelinda, Xerxes, Siroe, Samson, Giulio Cesare, Rinaldo, and Jephtha.

Other notable premieres in the month of February include Mussorgsky's Boris Godunov (this day 8th of February 1874 in Moscow) and Grieg and Ibsen's Peer Gynt (24th of February 1876 in Christiana). Also, the very first Italian opera of them all, Monteverdi's L'Orfeo performed for the first time on the 22nd of February 1607 in Mantua.

We have printed our annual NewMusicSA bulletin: now available at a few university libraries and online. We also have updated membership forms, please email [email protected]

We do want to include a list of premieres by members in future bulletins, so please keep our editor informed thereof. More information to follow in next month's newsletter.

As the year begins to get on its feet, please remember to send your news to [email protected]

Another exciting upcoming event, in Cape Town:
MusicDance021

After a hugely successful first season, MusicDance021 is back in March 2019, providing a rare platform for interdisciplinary performance collaboration in Cape Town. Open to musicians, dancers, actors and singers, the project brings together established and emerging artists in a cutting-edge workshop and performance format.  MusicDance021 offers the space, time and resources for the study of real-time composition in performance through specialised improvisation workshops, public performances and movement technique classes.

Improvisation workshops will run over 5 consecutive Sundays at the Theatre Arts Admin Collective in Observatory, Cape Town from 10 March – 7 April. These are interdisciplinary in nature and focus on practicing techniques for making real-time composed (improvisation) performances. Workshops are led by Amsterdam based artist Manuela Lucia Tessi, in collaboration with a team of highly experienced teachers: Coila-Leah Enderstein (music), Kristina Johnstone and Thalia Laric (dance) and Frans Mandilakhe Zunguze (lighting design).

Alongside the improvisation workshops, performances will be presented by participating artists and workshop facilitators. This offers an exciting opportunity for all involved to practice skills and techniques explored during the workshops in a public performance setting. Performances will be held on 13, 14, 22, 23 March and 7 April at 8pm at the Theatre Arts Admin Collective.

Technique classes for dancers are offered as part of the project and will be held on Mondays and Tuesdays from 9am-11am at UCT Dance Studios. Classes will be taught by Manuela Lucia Tessi and Kristina Johnstone.

MusicDance021 seeks to unearth new directions for performance in South Africa, offering participants and audiences insight into the immediacy, fluidity and risk of real-time composition in performance.

MusicDance021 is kindly supported by ACT and Nedbank Arts Affinity.
