To all our subscribers
Welcome to our April Newsletter. In this issue, we have reminders about our Indaba and Annual Bulletin calls; news of the forthcoming ISCM World Music Days; information about Lyrics on-line magazine; opportunities for composers and performers; a Press Release as well as the usual reminder of opportunities. As always, do let me know of any newsworthy items, for the next issue, that would help you to publicise your events in or after June 2018. Likewise, if you hear of any composers’ or performers’ opportunities, just send an email to me at [email protected]. NMSA Indaba 2018 I recently notified everyone of our announcement of the NMSA Indaba, to be held in Nelson Mandela University in Port Elizabeth from 5 to 8 October. We need to fill these dates with exciting events, concerts, talks, discussions, etc. and we need more submissions from you. Please revisit this Call here and I urge you to send in your submissions as soon as possible, but by 12 May latest. Reminder, Submissions for Bulletin 2018, issue 17 The deadline for submitting concepts for this year’s bulletin has passed, but we have not received a single concept or idea from anyone! It is not too late to send me draft material. We would like to publish information about the New Music scene in South Africa over the past year, including a list of first performances, new music projects and the like. We need to hear from composers, performers and musicologists – anyone connected with the South African music scene – so we can include your events in the bulletin. We will even publish short music scores of recent pieces, so please send in any relevant information to [email protected]. The Call can be downloaded here. ISCM World Music Days This year, we will be well represented at the World Music Days in Beijing, China. The Official Submissions were the ones we asked members to submit works to us and, out of the six works that were presented to Beijing, John Simon’s ‘Coquette’ for flute solo was chosen. Additionally, as a piece by Maike Watson was included last year, she could not enter again this year under the banner of the ‘Official Submissions’ (ISCM rules), so she decided to enter as an individual. Her work ‘VI Aphorisms’ for piano solo was selected. We offer our hearty congratulations to both these composers whose works will be performed in Beijing between 19 to 26 May.
