Warm Greetings to all our subscribers

Firstly, apologies for the delay in this month's newsletter caused by some technical issues which has resulted in our regular newsletter writer asking me to produce this month's edition as an interim measure.

This provides an excellent opportunity for me to convey the latest news about NewMusicSA: After a successful run as Chairman and a great Indaba festival at Nelson Mandela University, Malcolm Dedman has decided to take a break to preserve his health. We thank him for his commitment and excellent service. Look out for a special feature later this month celebrating his compositions. The board otherwise stays the same, with myself taking on the role as (acting) Chair.

I would also like to remind all members that they are entitled to an a page on the website which they can use to feature their works or put forward their ideas however they see fit. We exist as an organisation to serve composers and composition in South Africa in general, but for our members in particular, so any task that can contribute to your success that is within our powers will be gladly undertaken.

In the same vein, please do not hesitate to send news of any upcoming events you think may be of interest to our readers to news@newmusicsa.org.za. Look out for news on our 2019 festival in next edition.

And with that, we wish you great success in all your composition endeavors!

Yours faithfully
Douglas Scott

Message from Michael Blake: "I was deeply saddened by the news of fellow composer and friend Makhaya Mjana's passing last week. He was my exact contemporary and I met him in 1998 when I returned to live in (the New) South Africa. With his award-winning choir Joy of Africa, we collaborated on many occasions, starting with the very first edition of the New Music Indaba in 2000 when he conducted a massed choir in the Makhanda (Grahamstown) Cathedral singing the world premiere of Kevin Volans's "One Day Fine". One occasion that particularly stands out was in 2004 when Joy of Africa (with Makhaya himself in the tenor section) joined an ad hoc ensemble in the South African premiere of Gavin Bryars's "Jesus Blood Never Fail'd Me Yet". This is the most rousing version of this piece I've ever heard, and I'm posting it here for everyone to hear. The choir joins in about midway. You can of course hear it live in Cape Town on 29 March at the Purpur Festival (non-choral version)."

The theme of next year's Bulletin will be resilience. Please submit contributions, big or small, serious or less so, of any kind, around this theme. Essays, interviews, news items, reports and stories of human lives (always around music) are all welcome.  And certainly, send in the scores (by the score). Incidentally, the word Resilience need not feature in the title or the text.

Also remember to send in any information about works you have composed in the last five years.

Submissions can be sent to:

Deadline: 30 April 2019

Invitation to participate in a composer survey

As librarians in the Loeb Music Library at Harvard University, we seek
opportunities to collect contemporary composers' creations to
facilitate discovery within a library context and to develop library
collections for future research. We wish to gain insight into how
libraries can assist the discovery, collection, and access to
contemporary music scores. Even if you haven't thought about libraries
collecting your work, this survey is for you.

This survey should take no more than 3-5 minutes to complete and can
be found at the link below. During the survey you will be asked to
share information about the format, distribution, and access to your
works. It will be available until April 15, 2019.

Surveying composers: Methods of distribution, discoverability, and
accessibility of their works and the corresponding impact on library collections. [1]

This study has been approved by the Institutional Review Board at
Harvard University. This survey is optional and does not ask for any
personally identifiable information. Submission of the survey will be
interpreted as your informed consent to participate. If you have
questions about this survey please contact Elizabeth Berndt-Morris at
eaberndtmorris@fas.harvard.edu  or Sandi-Jo Malmon at
smalmon@fas.harvard.edu.
