Dear Subscriber

Welcome to our August Newsletter. In this issue, we have news of our Indaba; news of the Visby Residency; a call for works in various categories; news from our members; performance news of an event in South African as well as the usual reminder of opportunities.

As always, do let me know of any newsworthy items, for the next issue, that would help you to publicise your events in or after September. Likewise, if you hear of any composers’ or performers’ opportunities, just send an email to me at malcolmdedman@gmail.com.

NewMusicSA Indaba 2017

Due to unforeseen circumstances, dates and venue for this event have had to be changed. We will now be holding a short Indaba in Pretoria from 10 to 12 November. The venue for 10 and 12 (Friday and Sunday) will be the Tauromenium and on Saturday 11 at the home of Douglas Scott. (Please note that events on 10 November have still to be confirmed).  We will send out full programme details nearer the time but, in the meantime, we ask that anyone who can be there during these dates please diarise them as we would like to see as many of you there as possible. This is NMSA’s main event of the year!

Visby Residency

Congratulations to Diale Mabitsela as he has been selected by NewMusicSA to attend the four-week residency in Visby, to be held from 19 September to 15 October. Diale will join a composer selected by the Sterkfontein Composers Meeting for the four week period.

Please note, registration must be made before 20 October 2017. Registration forms are available here.

News from our members
  1. Maike Watson
South African College of Music student Maike Watson’s composition for piano Prälüd has been chosen for the International Society for Contemporary Music (ISCM) 2017 festival in Vancouver in November. She is one of 88 composers from 50 countries whose works have been selected.

Please visit website for full details.

  1. Roché van Tiddens
In February of this year Roché van Tiddens was selected to take part in the Young Composers Meeting, Apeldoorn, the Netherlands where the Orkest de Ereprijs performed pieces by 16 young composers. The above webpage shows details of the chosen piece ‘Ek Verlang na die Plaas’. He was chosen out of more than 100 applicants. Roché says: “The prize consists of a commission to write a new work for the chamber group at the Internationale Stichting Masterclasses Apeldoorn, August 2017. The chamber group consists of clarinet, violin, viola and cello and is made up of performers taking part in the week of masterclasses. The piece is called, ‘Het Jy die Olifant Gehoor?’ and creates rhythmic textures that resemble the ecosystem around elephants. I also bring in an interpretation of the elephant call that warns the other animals in the ecosystem of potential danger. The work will be performed on the 30th of August in Apeldoorn.”

‘Ek verlang na die plaas’ will also be performed for a second time at the Gaudeamus Muziekweek, Utrecht, as part of the "best of the young composers" concert (see above website).

Press report can be found here.

Also shown on Roché’s website is information about a performance of ‘So Glad Soos Seep’ in the No Frontiers Music Festival in Birmingham, UK. Links to both pieces can be found on his website.

We wish Roché well for his future career as a composer, which he now plans to develop in the Netherlands.
