Dear Subscriber
Welcome to our July Newsletter. In this issue, we have a call for applicants to participate in the Visby residency; call for works in various categories; news of a jazz symposium; news of a South African première; a report on another première and concert tour as well as the usual reminder of opportunities. As always, do let me know of any newsworthy items, for the next issue, that would help you to publicise your events in or after September. Likewise, if you hear of any composers’ or performers’ opportunities, just send an email to me at [email protected]. University of Pretoria Jazz Symposium For those interested in jazz, this is a Call for Submissions for a one day Symposium on the subject of ‘Freedom in Jazz’. It will be held on 6 October in the University of Pretoria. It will bring together social scientists, ethnomusicologists, musicians and lovers of jazz for a day of dialogues: academic and musical. The symposium seeks to engage with jazz practice in the manner suggested above. Based on this conception, the organisers invite presentation submissions in the following thematic areas:
Abstracts and queries can be directed to: Marita Lübbe, [email protected]. The symposium will conclude with performances by the Mageshen Naidoo Ensemble, the Tshwane School of Music, Jesse Mogale and CAFCA. Premières Reminder: On Tuesday 22 August at 19h30, the Kayser String Quartet is giving a world première performance of David Kosviner’s Durban Essence. This work, in one movement and for piano quintet, was commissioned by SAMRO. David Smith is the pianist and the concert, which also features music by Beethoven and Shostakovich, will take place in Durban at the Jewish Centre – 44 KE Masinga (Old Fort) Road - as part of the Friends of Music recitals. West Coast Youth Orchestra Readers may recall that, in last month’s newsletter, I announced a première of my own music, Our Rainbow Nation, written for the West Coast Youth Orchestra. The work was received well at their concert in Langebaan, and also during their tour of Europe, in particular Slovakia. More appropriately, the orchestra (both senior and junior) competed with 31 other orchestras from around the globe and the senior orchestra was awarded 80%, whereas the junior orchestra was awarded 71%. I felt that this was a tremendous achievement bearing in mind that some members consist of youth from disadvantaged backgrounds, and that many had not been exposed to contemporary Western music. I am sure that you will all join me in wishing this orchestra well for their future development. Reminder of Opportunities 1. 25th International Music Competition – Vittoria Caffa Righetti Prize This is an opportunity for both performers and composers. Please visit their website where full details may be downloaded. Note the deadline for submitting their application form is 15 September. Further information can be requested by sending an email to [email protected]. 2. International Chamber Music Competition The next “Città di Pinerolo e Torino – Città Metropolitana” International Chamber Music Competition (for the Cities of Pinerolo, of Torino, and of its surrounding area), which is part of the World Federation of International Music Competitions in Geneva, will take place in Pinerolo and Turin from 5 to 11 March 2018. In 2016 the jury of renowned musicians awarded prizes amounting to 23,000 Euros to winners chosen from 100 musicians belonging to 42 chamber music ensembles (under 33 years of age) from all over the world. Visit webpage for more information. Note, deadline for entry is 8 January 2018.
