Welcome to our July Newsletter. In this issue, we have news of the ISCM World Music Days, 2019; opportunities for composers; information about a new CD release; news from a member as well as the usual reminder of opportunities.

ISCM World Music Days 2019

ISCM WMD will be held in Tallinn, Estonia from 2-10 May 2019. A notice has already been sent to all our members who can apply at no cost as NMSA is a member of the South African Section of the ISCM. This is their ‘official’ submission process.

Composers who are non-members may also apply and have two options. If you become a member of NMSA for a small fee of R200, you can enter this prestigious event at no extra cost. You can also apply as an individual but the cost is €50 to the ISCM.

Composer members who wish to submit in the official category must send scores by Saturday 18 August to [email protected] or to my email address, [email protected]. Three board members (who will not be submitting scores) will select the final six works in accordance with the ISCM rules and submit to them by 10 September latest. Members submitting by this method may send up to three scores, stating clearly in which category they are submitting. In the final round, however, only one work per composer is allowed, so we are asking for as many as possible to send in your best work.


OUT HEAR New Music Week Call for Scores

The OUT HEAR New Music Week 2018 is happy to announce a Call for Scores and proposals to participate in a Symposium and Master Class in Composition on December 12th to 16th, 2018, lead by their ensemble-in-residence, String quartet of the Ensemble Klangforum, in collaboration with our faculty Clemens Gadenstätter, Dimitri Papageorgiou, and Orestis Toufektsis.

IV International Uuno Klami Composition Competition

The IV International Uuno Klami Composition Competition will be held between 2018 and 2019.
This is a competition for a work for orchestra – please see poster.

- Compositions must be submitted to the Competition Office by 3 December 2018 latest.
- The Jury will be Finland’s Kalevi Aho and Magnus Lindberg and Estonia’s Erkki-Sven Tüür. The conductor member of the Jury will be Olari Elts (Estonia).
- The following prizes will be awarded: I prize €11,000, II prize €9,000 and III prize €7,000.
- There is no age limit or entry fee.
- The works shortlisted for the finals will be performed by the Kymi Sinfonietta at two finals concerts, to be held in the cities of Kouvola and Kotka (Finland) in autumn 2019. The Jury chooses the winners only after hearing the finals concerts and their rehearsals.

International Composers Competition, Central European String Quartet

The Central European String Quartet announces an exciting international composition competition in 2018! Apply now for the opportunity to have your work premiered and performed multiple times by them during the 2018/19 season at important venues in Budapest, Hungary!

Prizes:
1st prize: 120.000 HUF
The winning composition will be premiered and performed in at least two concerts at important venues by the Central European String Quartet, in Budapest, Hungary, during the 2018/19 season.
2nd prize: 35.000 HUF

Application deadline: 1 September 2018.

New CD Release

Michael Blake has released a CD of his compositions for violoncello and piano, titled ‘The Philosophy of Composition’, recently released on Wergo. He says he is ‘thrilled with the fabulous performances by Friedrich Gauwerky and Daan Vandewalle’.

He is selling these at cost price: €13,50, or ZAR200 + postage. Note the retail price is normally €18,50.

Member’s News

Congratulations to Keith Moss who has been lucky enough to be accepted among 20 other composers from around the world to attend the São Paulo Contemporary Composers Festival in September 2018 (mentioned in this newsletter). A new work will be premiered at the Festival, recorded and broadcast live on Brazilian national television and radio, after which he plans to bring the recording home. There is a further possibility of having one of his orchestral works premiered by the Brazilian National Orchestra.

Living in New Zealand, Keith has managed to get some local funding so he can attend the Festival, but he would appreciate any further financial assistance. If anyone finds themselves in a generous position they can send a little something via PayPal: [email protected]. In return for such kind gestures, Keith will send a recording of his new piece for guitar, string quartet & bass.


Reminder of Opportunities

      1.  Mauricio Kagel Composition Competition
Composers younger than 40 years can submit pieces for piano that are suitable for children and young adults.

Deadline: 15 August 2018.

The prize money totals 10,000 Euros.

This is a competition for the composition of a guitar ensemble work to encourage young guitarists to enjoy their playing.
