Chesney Palmer is a promising young composer who has been accepted to study for a Masters in Composition at the University of the Free State Odeion School of Music, but has not managed to secure funding as of yet. If anyone has any information, connections or ideas that can help him out, please contact us at [email protected] so we can put you in contact directly. Chesney has been involved in music for the past 10 years as a pianist, clarinetist and composer in South Africa. He has had the privilege of studying at the acclaimed National School of the Arts in Braamfontein Johannesburg one of the country's leading art schools. During this period he studied both piano and clarinet and achieved several awards for music such as Half Colours for music and best music student as well as received a place on the Honour Roll of the Royal College of Music for external examinations. He has recently completed his degree in music with honours and has been under the tutelage of Dr Andile Khumalo, Dr Christopher Letcher, Dr Jonathan Crossley, Dr Cameron Harris, Peter Cartwright and Professor Malcolm Nay and has received master classes from Lukas Ligeti, Kevin Volans and Professor Jeanne-Zaidel Rudolph. He has had the privilege of also playing as part of the South African National Youth Orchestra in 2019 as well as being a part of the Composers National Collegium which premiered the works of 8 of the best young composers in the country at the University of Pretoria's Music Festival that took place in August 2019. Played by the world renowned Odeion String Quartet with Samson Diamond, Sharon de Kock, Jeanne-Louise Moolman and Animari van de Westhuizen. His work work for string quartet called "Sketches of Memory" was premiered originally at the University of the Witswatersrand in July scored for String Quartet and Solo Soprano and then adapted for String Quartet and premiered at the Festival which also received a repeat concert at the University of the Witswatersrand. The work was written to raise awareness about injustice towards women in South Africa and was based on a South African poem. The work depicts the emotional states of a young girl that is robbed of her innocence and has to overcome the fear to speak out against the injustice. The piece is very emotive and circles through different tonal centres to capture her changing emotions and thoughts. https://soundcloud.com/user-821553019/sketches-of-memory-string-quartet

A great thank you must go out to François de Villiers for his continued efforts in that regard. Another great moment came when Franco Prinsloo work “Pula! Pula!” made South Africa proud with an excellent reception at the ISCM World Music Days in Tallinn. The 2019 Indaba at UNISA once again showcased the South Africa new music scene, a festival I trust all participants found a valuable experience. I thank Professor Marc Duby and his team for all their efforts with and also thank our faithful sponsors for this event, the SAMRO Foundation, Business Arts South Africa (BASA), the Malta Arts Council and, of course, UNISA. I assumed the chairman’s mantle earlier last year after the resignation of Malcolm Dedman due to personal pressures. We thank him for service, and especially for his efforts in curating the 2018 Indaba. To facilitate smooth operations, I have compiled a list of some of the tasks and responsibilities which need to be considered in future:
Next, there are also some basic functions that need to be considered:
The secretary role is also presently vacant, this principally involves:
Finally, the membership portfolio involves:
This isn’t an exhaustive list, since things crop up from time to time. Please let us know if there is any way you feel you can contribute. All assistance is always most welcome. Planning for next year’s festival and Bulletin continues apace. Funding remains a concern, but we a continue to consider a number of avenues in this regards. Meanwhile, Lukas Ligeti has been chosen to perform his “Labyrinth of Stars” at next year’s World Music Days in New Zealand, and he will represent us there. Concert news:ISCM World Music Days 2020 New Zealand: Congratulations to Lukas Ligeti for having his work "Labyrinth of Stars" selected for performance/presentation during the ISCM2020 World New Music Days in New Zealand from 21 – 30 April 2020.
He writes: "I perform on marimba lumina, a sophisticated MIDI controller designed by synthesizer pioneer Donald Buchla. In 2009, I composed Labyrinth of Clouds, a concerto for marimba lumina and orchestra, commissioned by the American Composers Orchestra. I then experimented with improvisations based on that work’s solo part; in 2014, that coalesced into a new piece. Labyrinth of Stars – The Far Southeast is a new, further development, featuring new sections and designed for a surround-sound system rather than stereo. Using a wide variety of samples plus synthesizers, it combines African xylophone techniques with live mixing, and white noise with complex microtonal melodies." Indaba 2019 Call for Scores NewMusicSA Indaba (6-8 December 2019)
Methods, making, and materials NewMusicSA is pleased to announce the 2019 Indaba festival to be held at the University of South Africa over the weekend of 6-8 December. This year’s theme (curated by Marc Duby) is concerned with exploring how composers deploy specific methods and resources (materials) in making music, whether these compositions be in the form of scores or drawing from real-time improvised approaches. We envisage hosting a number of workshops, performances, academic papers, and special guests (TBA) related to the conference theme which is understood as open-ended to cater for a wide range of compositional approaches. Deadline for submission: 31 October Instrumentation: piano, violin, and clarinet (or combinations thereof, i.e. duets or solo pieces) Duration: 4-5 minutes No restrictions as to style, although we are a new music society, so taking cognisance of contemporary musical approaches is encouraged (incorporating extended techniques, improvisation, or electronics, in keeping with the overall theme of the festival). The selected scores will be rehearsed (with feedback/commentary from composers and the performers) and performed as part of the festival proceedings. Call for Selectors At the same time, if you do not want to submit a work this year, but would still like to be part of the Indaba process, we are looking for independent selectors. If you feel you can contribute in this important way. Indaba: Calls for papers and scoresOur calls for scores and papers for the Indaba 2019 to be held at UNISA Sunnyside Campus (Pretoria) has been delayed due to pending outcomes from certain funding agencies. I'm writing to let you know of a house concert that I will be doing with the tenor Sandile Mabaso on Sunday 7th July at 15.30. I know most of you are used to coming to my house and hearing music that is either brand new or at least written in this century. But I also have a fondness of the rest of the repertoire (I'm currently working on Beethoven and Chopin as well), and I have a great fondness for working with singers! So... Sandile and I will be doing a lovely programme of Italian songs and arias, which date mostly from the 18th century. Composers include Scarlatti, Monteverdi, Pergolesi, Gluck and more. I'm so happy to be doing this programme as these are well known and well loved songs! Do let me know if you'd like more details on the programme. For those of you who haven't heard Sandile, he has done some wonderful things, and some of you may have been lucky enough to have heard him in Johannesburg in 2012 as Puck in the Purcell opera The Fairy Queen. He has also sung in the opera Princess Magogo, and was a member of the Cape Town Opera Vocal ensemble. He has presented a variety of lieder recitals at various venues and festivals across South Africa. He is currently teaching, performing and writing in KwaZulu Natal. If you would like to stay after the concert, and socialise and enjoy the sunshine on my stoep, do bring whatever you'd like to drink! (We will have some wine available but sadly can't cater for everyone!) Here are the details: Date: Sunday, 7 July at 15.30 Place: 84 7th Avenue, Melville Parking: On the street, but there is a guard in the road Price: R120 Booking: essential, as space is limited and Sandile has a big fan club. It takes place at Mmabolela Reserve, in the Limpopo province of South Africa, right at the border with Botswana. It involves field work, studio work and theoretical/discussion presentations. The workshop/residency has a special focus on creative approaches to the work with environmental sound recordings, as well as the role of listening, through an extensive exploration of natural sound environments. It does not have a technical character but is instead conceived and directed towards (i) the questioning of canonical conceptions of so-called ‘field recordings’, and (ii) the development and realization of projects of sonic creation by the participant artists/composers with the recordings gathered and through the experience of dedicated listening in natural environments. The activities of the workshop/residency include: Introductory theoretical/discussion presentation sessions on environmental recordings and sound creation, with a historical / philosophical / critical perspective. • Field trips (both diurnal and nocturnal) for extensive listening and recording of sound environments. • Sessions of studio work (with laptop) using these materials. • Artists’ presentation / discussion sessions on sound creative work / environmental recordings. • Development and realization of a sound piece by each participant with some of the original sound materials gathered in the field work. • Presentation of the finished pieces by the participant artists. All these activities are organized in a daily schedule according to the changing sonic environments of Mmabolela Reserve. This typically involves many hours of field and studio work but there is also flexibility to allow participants to choose from several schedule options. The language for the workshop/residency is English. The director also speaks Spanish and has conversational levels of French, Portuguese and Italian. For the realization of the workshop/residency we hire the entire Mmabolela reserve for the whole duration of our stay. We have an original fully-equipped farmhouse in the property with several buildings at our disposal (the “Weederdooper” homestead), with several double rooms, which can accommodate a total maximum of 10 guests. The main building overlooks a water hole frequented by game and the homestead has its own plunge pool. The workshop/residency includes: § Hiring of the entire Mmabolela reserve for exclusive use by the participants during the whole duration of the workshop/residency. § Daily working sessions with field recordings, studio work, and collective theoretical/discussion presentations (total of 8 to 12 hours a day, with optional activities and flexible schedules). § Full accommodation: 2 nights hotel (arrival/departure) in Johannesburg (double room) + 13 nights in private farmhouses in Mmabolela (double rooms with beds, separate bathrooms, shower/toilets, dining/studio working room, electrical system with 220V power sockets, monitoring speaker system, beamer, kitchen, plunge pools). § All meals and beverages in Mmabolela as well as dinners in Johannesburg for arrival and departure days. § Transportation from/to the airport in Johannesburg. § Transportation to/from Mmabolela by minibus (approx. 7-8 hours). § Daily transportation in Mmabolela by 4x4 vehicle to field recording sites (day and night). § Local guides/drivers, chef, kitchen/maintenance staff, and logistics manager. Rates: Workshop/Residency 2-week rate per person: 2,900 Euros (Includes all of the above. Does not include flight to Johannesburg from participant’s departure location nor medical insurance.) ‘Sonic Mmabolela’ is a non-profit, independently-run project. Each participant artist/composer must seek funding for his/her workshop/residency costs, as well as the flight to Johannesburg and his/her medical insurance. To this end, after the application process (see below), we provide formal invitation letters to prospective participants. Dates workshop/residency: The ‘Sonic Mmabolela’ workshop/residency will take place in: 16 – 29 November 2019 The group needs a minimum of 6 participants for the workshop/residency to take place. Artists/composers interested need to send an application (only email, no post), consisting of: (i) updated CV, and (ii) examples of their sound work on audio files or –preferably- through internet links, to the following email address: E-mail: [email protected] Registration: The artists/composers selected after the application process will receive a formal invitation letter from the director of ‘Sonic Mmabolela’ to help them in seeking funding support.
